Care for Kids That Only a Furry Friend Could Provide
During her stays at Children’s Colorado, Patient Ambassador Raven leaned on the expert support of a special Medical “Dogtor” Galaxy.
Since its inception in 2019, Children’s Hospital Colorado’s medical dog program has paved the way for best practices as one of the leading programs across the country.
We are proud to support patients and families in unique and innovative ways, including the use of our highly trained dogs who provide animal-assisted therapeutic support for a wide range of patients. Our Medical Dogs help kids and teens feel safe, seen and understood during some of their most challenging moments.
Raven was diagnosed with a form of congenital heart disease when she was 15 months old. She underwent several heart procedures that gave her time to grow before she needed open-heart surgery to replace a valve in her heart. At 7 years old, she had successful open-heart surgery. Today, Raven sees her cardiologist at least twice a year, right in her home state of Wyoming, thanks to Children’s Colorado Outreach Clinics.

Supporting Families Through Medical and Financial Hardships
At Children’s Colorado, 45-55% of the children served are covered by Colorado Medicaid, and over 90% of primary care patients are insured by Medicaid or Child Health Plan Plus. Our community health initiatives are critical in bridging gaps and providing equitable access to excellent care.
Our programs meet families wherever they are, providing wraparound support that strengthens whole-child health. Through prevention, early intervention and personalized care we address the many interconnected factors that influence a child’s health, ensuring no need goes unmet.
A cornerstone of this effort is Resource Connect, a program made possible almost entirely through philanthropic support. This innovative program delivers wraparound support for basic needs like food and nutrition, housing and legal assistance, helping families overcome barriers to health and stability.
Since its launch in 2019, more than 5,800 families have benefited from Resource Connect. Generous donor support allows us to expand these services and strengthen our whole-child health system of care, improving outcomes for kids and families while reducing long-term costs.
“Resource Connect works because of its comprehensiveness and the strength of its partnerships with our primary care clinics and community-based services. Our approach relies heavily on philanthropic support since many of the social services provided are not reimbursable by Medicaid or private insurers.”

Providing Excellent Care, Close to Home
Philanthropy in Southern Colorado
Donor support of Children’s Colorado, Colorado Springs makes an immediate and lasting impact on every aspect of patient care. Your generosity allows us to respond quickly to urgent needs, strengthen our expert teams in southern Colorado and provide southern Colorado kids with world-class care when and where they need it.
Supporting the Southern Colorado General Fund keeps your gift local, ensuring it stays within the region served by our Colorado Springs hospital. It also gives Children’s Colorado the flexibility to address the immediate needs of patients, families, caregivers and the broader community in an ever-changing environment.

Expanding Genetic Testing in Southern Colorado
Through genomic testing, Children’s Colorado doctors study a child’s DNA to make diagnoses, develop individualized treatment plans and tailor cures specifically designed for each patient.
Out of the potential 1,000 children in southern Colorado who need genetic testing to inform their health journeys, the vast majority face significant barriers in accessing this important diagnostic tool. Until now.
Until now.
Through a $1 million gift, the John and Margot Lane Foundation is accelerating the genetic testing timeline for kids in southern Colorado, ensuring that more families in our region get the answers they need faster.
Fighting Cancer While Reaching for the Stars: Zariea’s Story of Hope
“Thankfully, being on oral chemotherapy has opened more opportunities for me, while also allowing me to be a somewhat regular teenager. I am grateful to my team at Children’s Colorado, my family, friends, school district – and donors like you – for making all of this possible.”
— Zariea, Children’s Hospital Colorado Ambassador

Investing in the Breakthroughs of Tomorrow
Our community of donors invests in big ideas to change the health of humankind through research. Thanks to unrestricted philanthropy, our talented research teams across our health system can pursue innovative ideas that transform care for children and families.
Each year, the Colorado Child Health Research Institute (CCHRI) makes financial awards for promising research projects through a competitive process. In spring 2024, the CCHRI supported 10 investigators, including several early-career researchers, with nearly $1.5 million in funding. One-third of these projects were funded through philanthropy, greatly expanding the number of projects launched. These awards position the hospital as an excellent place to conduct academic research and train the brightest minds in pediatric medical science. The CCHRI consistently receives more research applications than it can fund, making philanthropy essential in launching groundbreaking projects and advancing the careers of the scientists driving them.
“We are amazed by the incredible scientists we’ve had the opportunity to meet, and it’s an honor to invest in their research and belief in a healthier future for kids.”
Research donors
“As a leading medical campus, research is at the heart of what we do. It is only through research that we can discover the cures, treatments and therapies of tomorrow, while saving lives today. Philanthropic investments in research have the potential to impact people at every age, across many conditions, from fetal care to geriatrics.”
