Maximize Your Impact with the Enterprise Zone Tax Credit

Long before winning the 2023 Mighty Millions Raffle Grand Prize Showhome, Mike Segura spent his childhood living in modest military quarters at the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, where the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is now located.
Mike lived there for about six months in the 1970s while his father, Command Sergeant Major Ramon “Ray” Segura, worked on decommissioning another hospital on the campus. Throughout his career, Ray held a variety of roles that involved taking care of his fellow soldiers.
After Ray passed away in 2006, Mike and his family looked for a way to preserve the legacy of their dad’s contributions to the country at the new Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center, since Ray’s second career was at the former VA hospital in Denver. But another opportunity to honor Ray emerged.
A Mighty Gesture
When Mike won the Mighty Millions Raffle showhome and later sold it, he was inspired to donate $500,000 to Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation and honor his father in the process.
“It’s because of the Mighty Millions Raffle that I won this windfall, and it was the right thing to do,” said Mike. “Anything that Children’s Colorado does to help kids with the money I gave will be much more meaningful than what I would have done with it.”
To recognize his generous gift and honor his father, Mike chose to place a plaque on a patio that offers a respite space for Children’s Colorado caregivers. It was the perfect place to remember his father, a man who spent his life supporting the resilience of his fellow military members.
“Dad took care of the people who took care of people,” said Mike. “Throughout my dad’s careers in the U.S. Army and in the Veterans Administration, so many people were struck by his humanity, by caring for others: a fitting testament to those who choose the medical profession.”
A Generous Tax-savvy Gift
When making his gift, Mike took full advantage of the Enterprise Zone Tax Credit, a program that provides Colorado tax payers with an opportunity to donate to Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation and reduce the amount of Colorado state income tax they pay.*
Mike allocated $400,000 to qualifying Enterprise Zone programs and donated the remaining $100,000 to the Children’s Fund, which supports the hospital’s most urgent needs.

“Because of the Enterprise Zone Tax Credit, I was able to meet all of my philanthropic goals in 2024. The credit was like a range extender for my charitable giving.”
