Meet Patient Ambassador Darius

When Darius was born with a life-threatening condition that required immediate colorectal surgery, his family searched the country for experts who could give him the best possible outcome. They found hope in world-renowned surgeons Dr. Alberto Peña and Dr. Andrea Bischoff, who performed an emergency surgery that saved Darius’s life. Four months later, Dr. Peña performed the innovative Peña pull-through procedure to help Darius thrive. His family continued to follow his care team wherever they practiced, eventually bringing them to Children’s Hospital Colorado.

At Children’s Colorado, Darius was surrounded by a compassionate, multidisciplinary team who understood the complexity of his condition, VACTERL association. From surgeons to specialists across departments, his caregivers have become like family — guiding him through multiple follow-up surgeries and helping him transition into young adulthood.

Now 17, Darius is a passionate advocate for kids with complex medical needs, and he credits his care team with helping him live a vibrant, full life — filled with snowboarding dreams and foodie adventures during visits to Colorado.
