Genetic Testing Transformed Mishika’s Life

When Mishika was 8 years old, her family noticed one of her feet was becoming misshapen, causing her challenges in walking. She was referred to Children’s Hospital Colorado, where she was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, a rare genetic neuromuscular disease that causes nerve damage, mostly in the arms and legs. CMT can also cause spinal abnormalities – and Mishika also has scoliosis.

At 14 years old, Hirvin Paredes made a promise to repay the kindness and care his family received from Children’s Hospital Colorado. His younger brother’s diagnosis of a heart condition presented significant financial challenges for their single mother.

A Lasting Legacy

In 1994, when 9-week-old Noah received a heart transplant, he was among the first pediatric patients at Children’s Hospital Colorado to undergo this surgery. He was also one of the youngest to get a new heart at the hospital.
