A Record-breaking Year
In 2024, the Liver Transplant Program at Children’s Colorado reached a historic milestone, performing a record-breaking 22 transplants, surpassing its previous record of 20 transplants set in 2021. As a nationally recognized transplant program, Children’s Colorado has the only pediatric-focused, multi-specialty program in the Rocky Mountain region and the lowest transplant waitlist times in the nation. It is one of only six pediatric transplant programs nationally with significant experience performing living donor liver transplants.
“It’s striking to see that while living donors make up roughly 15% of pediatric liver transplants nationally, they account for 40% of transplants at Children’s Colorado,” said Amy Feldman, MD, Pediatric Solid Organ Transplant Surgical Director at Children’s Colorado. “This highlights our unique expertise and experience performing living donor liver transplants. With the help of our adult colleagues at the University of Colorado and the altruistic community, we can treat more kids with liver disease.”
Philanthropic support, such as the newly created Michael Wachs Pediatric Transplant Endowed Fund at Children’s Hospital Colorado, helps drive our transplant team’s impressive patient outcomes.
Continuing a Legacy: The Michael Wachs Pediatric Transplant Endowed Fund at Children’s Hospital Colorado
After many decades as a surgeon at Children’s Colorado, Michael Wachs, MD, passed away in early 2025. To honor Dr. Wachs’ legacy, his sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Steven Mitchell, along with their three children, generously offered to match donations made in his memory to create an endowed fund to support the pediatric transplant program at Children’s Colorado.
Dr. Wachs joined the pediatric transplant program at Children’s Colorado in 1995 and helped it to become one of the most successful in the nation. In partnership with the University of Colorado, he helped to build one of the largest living donor pediatric transplant programs in the country.

A Jaw in a Day: Innovating an Effective, First-of-its-Kind Solution
Phuong Nguyen, MD, FSCS, FAAP, a renowned pediatric plastic surgeon who has traveled the world restoring facial and cranial differences, recently led a groundbreaking, 16-hour surgery to construct a functioning jaw for 19-year-old Ashley.
Born with multiple rare craniofacial conditions, including Goldenhar syndrome and a Tessier 7 cleft, Ashley faced a lifetime of challenges until this complex procedure offered new hope. The innovative “jaw in a day” procedure — a first for a congenital case in a young patient — involved reconstructing the jaw using a free fibula flap (bone from her leg), dental implants and expertise from a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, orthodontists and a prosthodontist.
By using Ashley’s own tissue instead of prosthetics, the team ensured the potential for natural growth and long-term function. The surgery was a remarkable success, significantly improving Ashley’s ability to breathe and eat, and setting a new benchmark in pediatric reconstructive surgery.

“We took part of Ashley’s leg bone, put it into her jaw and gave Ashley the smile that she had never had before.” — Phuong Nguyen, MD, FSCS, FAAP

Crypto Fuels Record Donation to Brain Tumor Lab
After 5-year-old Mira was diagnosed in 2024 with a rare brain tumor, her dad, Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur Siqi Chen, made a simple plea on social media for help. Chen launched an online fundraising campaign, and in just two days, donors contributed more than $230,000 for pediatric neurosurgeon and tumor expert Todd C. Hankinson, MD, MBA’s research.

Innovation Through Robot-assisted and Innovative Surgery
A Journey of Hope and Healing
What started as a headache turned into a life-changing hospital journey for 7-year-old Olivia (Liv), a little girl from northern Colorado. Liv was referred to Children’s Colorado because she had a serious infection and needed immediate treatment.
Specialists in otolaryngology and the Infectious Disease Program at Children’s Colorado determined Liv had an infection in her brain which was rotting part of her skull. Her care team developed a plan to remove the part of her bone that had been impacted by the infection and treated Liv for sepsis.
Liv ended up having three surgeries in three days. Now fully recovered, Liv loves playing with her friends and the color purple.
“We will be forever grateful for Children’s Colorado — they saved our little girl’s life.” — Tasha, Liv’s mom

“Surgical interventions have saved and improved the lives of people I love. I’ve seen firsthand the skill, precision and compassion required, not just in the operating room, but in the care that surrounds and supports it. That’s why I’ve chosen to invest in the people behind the care who are discovering new treatments and delivering the best clinical outcomes. Endowed chairs help ensure that Children’s Colorado can continue to lead the way, attracting and supporting the very best surgical minds for generations to come.”
— Craig Ponzio, grateful father, endowment donor, director emeritus of the Children’s Hospital Colorado Board of Directors and former trustee of the Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation
