Britt Urband: A Champion for Children’s Colorado

June 20, 2025

When Britt and Jason Urband’s son, a healthy kindergartener at the time, suddenly fell gravely ill with antibiotic-resistant pneumonia, it was Children’s Hospital Colorado that saved his life.

What started as a minor health issue quickly escalated, leading to an emergency department visit and a weeklong hospital stay. When their son’s condition did not respond to initial treatments, his doctors didn’t give up. They collaborated with specialists from other pediatric hospitals to find the right approach to combat the pneumonia. Their teamwork ultimately saved the Urbands’ son.

“It was a turning point for our family,” Britt said. “We could have had a completely different outcome if we hadn’t had access to the expertise at Children’s Colorado. It made us realize how fortunate we are to have this hospital in our community.”

While navigating the complexity of their son’s illness, Britt and Jason were inspired to give back. Their financial support has evolved through signature events like Children’s Gala, as well as annual gifts, including gifts of stock. Today, they are members of the Children’s Circle of Care and the Mae B. Boettcher Society.

“It became clear to me that Children’s Colorado is an irreplaceable resource for families in our region,” Britt stated. “I wanted to ensure that the hospital’s impact continues to grow and be part of spreading that message.”

Volunteering to Support Critical Needs

Britt’s involvement grew when she joined the Children’s Colorado Foundation Board of Trustees and began volunteering as a Champions of Philanthropy advocate. Through these roles, she helps raise philanthropy to support areas like pediatric mental health and cancer care and connects new volunteers and donors to our mission.

“Some people often think because Children’s Colorado is a large hospital that it doesn’t need donations,” Britt noted. “But in reality, philanthropy is essential to the hospital’s ability to the needs of our community, especially for families who cannot advocate for themselves.”

Leveraging Financial Expertise to Maximize Impact

In her role as Market Manager for J.P. Morgan Private Bank in the Rockies, Britt’s professional experience as a wealth adviser equips her with a unique perspective on philanthropy. She works closely with clients who want to give back through charitable donations, including some of whom are unsure of the best approach.

“Cash is just one way to make a gift but often is not the most efficient,” Britt explains. “Non-cash assets like stocks, real estate properties and highly appreciated assets are wonderful to give without having to realize a low basis.”

Britt is a strong advocate for giving through DAFs during market downturns to continue philanthropic impact without impacting a donor’s personal cash position.

“DAF holders don’t always realize how much capital they have sitting in their funds, and they’re often hesitant to distribute those assets,” Britt explained. “The capital is already there, set aside for charity. It’s a perfect opportunity to put that money to work, especially by supporting vital programs at Children’s Colorado.”

I’m committed to making sure that donors realize the power they have to make a real difference in the lives of kids and families and opportunities to do more by considering gifts of non-cash assets.
