Endowments
Endowments have a long-term impact at Children’s Hospital Colorado
Endowments are a win-win for donors and Children’s Colorado because they are designed to provide an ongoing, steady stream of support for the specific programs and services you value far into the future.
Types of endowments
Endowed Chairs are a generous commitment by a donor that enables the hospital to attract and retain the best specialists in a field of pediatric medicine. A named chair is a prestigious honor accorded by Children’s Colorado and is reserved for the most distinguished scientists, clinicians, academicians and leaders. An endowed chair recognizes and promotes excellence in pediatric health care and signifies the hospital’s commitment and a donor’s interest to support that work for the long term.
Endowed Chairs may be established with a gift of $2.5 million or more.
Endowed Directorships provide resources for outstanding directors of the hospital’s medical and non-medical programs. Donors to Endowed Directorships may support cutting-edge research, ongoing training or innovation in program development and deployment, or give directors the ability to recruit the top practitioners in the field.
Endowed Directorships may be established with a gift of $1 million or more.
Endowed Professorships help the hospital to attract, retain and promote outstanding health care professionals. Professorships are awarded to physicians and nurse scientists who have demonstrated extraordinary talent in advancing medical science. Endowed Professorship donors provide perpetual support for teaching, research and professional development.
Endowed Professorships may be established with a gift of $500,000 or more.
Endowed Fellowships enable the hospital to compete for the most promising medical talent and ensure that our community has a pool of accomplished caregivers to meet society’s increasingly complex healthcare needs. Fellowships are generally three-year training programs for physicians who have completed their residencies in a particular specialty.
Endowed Fellowships may be established with a gift of $500,000 or more.
Endowed Funds promote the continued excellence of specific programs at Children’s Colorado by supplementing general operating support to allow staff to innovate, grow and strengthen programs. Endowed funds are essential to a fiscally healthy institution, supporting clinical programs, research, education and advocacy.
Endowed Funds may be established with a gift of $50,000 or more.
How do endowments work?
When you make an endowment gift, it is held in an investment portfolio to produce income that the hospital may only use for the purpose that you specify. Permanent endowments are invested “in perpetuity”; that is, the principal amount, or corpus, remains invested, while a portion of the investment income is used to support Children’s Colorado’s mission, as outlined in an agreement between the donor and Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation, acting on behalf of the hospital.
Your endowment funds are professionally invested in a diversified investment portfolio designed to maximize your impact by balancing two primary objectives:
- Maintaining and growing the long-term value of the corpus
- Providing ongoing financial support for the programs and purposes you have specified
Led by volunteers and advised by an independent asset management firm, the Children’s Hospital Colorado Health System (“the Health System”) Investment Committee manages endowment investments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Each year, a portion of the endowment portfolio’s investment gains are distributed to further Children’s Colorado’s mission as specified by you and other endowment donors. These distributions currently are of the average market value of the endowment’s principal. Distributions must be used in a manner that is consistent with the endowment fund’s purpose and your intent. Any investment income above the distributions remains invested in the endowment’s principal to pursue growth and to protect against inflation.
